Farrer Park Hospital is pleased to announce that it is the first in South East Asia to have implemented the Focal One® High-Intensity Frequency Ultrasound (HIFU) Robotic Technology, a non-invasive prostate cancer treatment, for patients with early-stage prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer affecting Singapore men[i]. When diagnosed, most men with prostate cancer do not have urinary problems, urine difficulties or pain. The diagnosis is from an abnormal blood test called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and a subsequent prostate biopsy that shows cancer cells.

Dr. Chong Kian Tai, Consultant Urologist and Chairman of the Focal One® Prostate Cancer Advisory Committee, said, "Fortunately, most patients with prostate cancer are diagnosed at its early stages. The cancer cells are still localized within the prostate gland and have not spread to other parts of the body. The Focal One® HIFU allows for accurate and dependable focal therapy with desirable outcomes for patients who have early-stage prostate cancer."

This non-invasive technique does not use surgical incisions and minimises potential complications associated with prostate cancer treatments, such as urine incontinence and impotence. The treatment is a day surgery procedure, and the patient can return to his usual routine quickly.
